NY Times Magazine Withdraws Altered Photo Essay

An article that featured allegedly manipulated photographs has been pulled from the website. They were thought to be "real photographs", whatever that means.

Tall Tales





"At the beginning of the 20th century some clever photographers specialized in Photoshop before the term existed, faking postcards from mainly rural communities. Images of oversized vegetables, fruits and animals created a utopian myth about a town or region and served as a way of encouraging settlement and population growth. Some noteworthy collections of these so-called "Tall Tale Postcards" can be found here (Wisconsin Historical Society) and here (American Museum of Photography). " - Low Tech Magazine

'Pixel-ated Art' made by Conventional Means

Close at work in his studio. He uses a photograph as reference for his photographs. He had a catastrophic spinal artery collapse in 1988 that left him severely paralyzed, he has continued to paint and produce work which remains sought after by museums and collectors.

Close creates large portraits in low-resolution grid squares. Viewed from afar, these squares appear as a single, unified image which attempt photo-reality, albeit in pixelated form.


This artist uses an 80s toy phenomenon to create a modern looking image. Using Rubik's cubes the artist known as "Mad Maxine" creates pixelated portraits.



Both artists above achieve a look similar to pixeli-zation or that of a pixelated digital image, much like Thomas Ruff's most recent work called JPEG.

* CLIPPING BOOK: Collect 10-15 images that show Photoshop manipulated photographs from publications, advertisements, and magazines. Be prepared to discuss the images in class. Prepare to address the conceptual and formal qualities of the images and their significance to you. The subject matter should in some way reflect your interests as a photographer. Use the library, bookstores, web resources, and magazines for research sources. Images from the web can make up 6 of the total 10-15 images and MUST BE PRINTED. No more than two on an 8.5 x 11 page.

The images above are examples of a manipulated images found on the internet, that use skills that we are currently learning. This type of image could be used for the Clipping Book due for Class 8.

In reaction to the news photographs from Iran that were doctored/"photoshopped" (see earlier blog entry-"Doctored Photos in the News") the images were again changed. This time the alterations were taken to the extreme, to make a point.

Robot Panoramas, Microsoft and Bladerunner

1. First off, if you haven't seen Bladerunner see it immediately. Go to Netflix, bump it to the top of you Queue and then watch it whenever "snail-mail" delivers it . Be advised it has some slower moments, resist the urge to check Facebook during these moments. Be patient and take in all the wonderful special effects of 1982. It holds up remarkably well, but I'll let you be the judge. See it, then read the articles below. Or just read them and see it later.. Interesting new digital photography technology always seems to be coming out. Have a look.
